3 ways to document your standard operating procedures (sop’s)
Standard operating procedures (aka SOPs) are a tried and true foundation if you plan on scaling up your business.
What should be documented inside an SOP? Any recurring process or task required to keep your business moving along day in & day out.
I recommend documenting these in a shareable format so that when you hire or outsource, they can be easily shared with new hires.
One of the most common things I hear from clients who are ready to start scaling their business is:
i don’t know where to start. I’m not organized enough.
Business owners commonly feel like they have all the knowledge of their business tasks inside their brain and it would be a lot more work for them to teach it to someone else, than to just do it themselves. But the truth is, that’s not how you scale. Spending time to document these processes now is going to save you so much time (and money!) down the line.
And, if you truly don’t have the time to document your SOPs, that’s a good sign you’re ready to outsource. That’s where we come in. We can get everything documented from a simple Loom video of you carrying out those recurring tasks. Then it’s all done and ready to go for you!
3 Ways to Document Your SOPs
1. use loom
Record yourself (and your screen) carrying out a task using Loom.
You now have a library of short video tutorials for every recurring task or process you do for your business. These are easily shareable and ready to go anytime you need (or your team needs) to know exactly how to do it. (Meaning they don’t have to ask you!)
2. Write it out
Write out step by step instructions using Google Docs.
Same result, different format! Instead of video tutorials, you’ll have a stack of shareable documents on deck and ready to go for yourself or your team.
3. task management tool
Build out workflow templates in a task management or CRM tool like ClickUp, Asana, or Monday.
These tools are the key to staying organized in your business and I cannot recommend them enough. The functionality of these is second to none when it comes to documenting and executing processes within your business. Again, this is an easily shareable format where you and your team can see the progress of tasks in real time.
